Using the Household Budget Worksheet

To begin using this spreadsheet there are few things that you should be aware. All of the highlighted cells contain formulas, so you should be very careful if you ever need to insert additional rows and always make sure to check the formulas used for calculating the difference as well as totals of the entire category. Although the list includes majority of the categories and items that the household budget may need, some of them may simply be not applicable to you, so you'll want to amend or may even remove them completely. You may want to read our article which explains how to create a budget.

The purpose of this worksheet is to help you compare and analyse your projected monthly budget with your actual expenses and of course with your income too.

To use this template, fill in the cells in "Budget" column. Doing so helps to establish your budgeting goal which represents the amount that you're allowed to spend. At the end of the month, you record in the "Actual" column how much you really spend throughout the month. With help of conditional formatting the cells in the "Difference" column containing negative values highlights red (bad) or green (good) if positive. All calculations in this spreadsheet are set up so that when the Actual are exceeding Projected values the Difference will be negative. The Difference will also be negative when your Actual income is less then your Projected income.

The Monthly Budget Result table summarizes your income and expenses and also calculates the NET as income less expense. We've also included additional cell (for avid savers) for recording any amount left from previous month unless of course you've transferred these amounts to your savings already and prefer to start a new month with 0 balance. If the NET has a negative value means that you've overspent your monthly budget.

Monthly Budget Chart. The household budget template contains bar chart which helps to visually present totals taken from every budget category for both "Budget" and "Actual" columns.

Adding or Removing Categories. The extensive list of categories included in the household budget spreadsheet can be amended or even removed, but the formula which calculates total can get messed up, so you just have to make sure the formula still works correctly.
